It was a pleasure to be invited to Secteur Privé by Founders Ayman Daouk and Colette Gibson, who generously hosted the Fitzrovia Galleries for the 'Late Lates' component of our seasonal programme.
The exhibition"Spring Raine" both reflects on Storey's artistic evolution over time while showcasing her latest creations, which navigates themes of preservation and historical resonance by reworking waste materials from the restoration of Parliament and the London German Embassy.
These works are reflective of the immersive experiences shared during Storey’s residency in London and in Paris amidst the pandemic. Drawing inspiration from Surrealist techniques and childhood memories, Storey's method transcends traditional boundaries, seamlessly blending realism with abstraction to unveil unique characters and compositions. The exhibition unveils a tapestry of emotions, movements, and moments captured on canvas, and demonstrates the resilience needed to climb and rebuild from uncertainty.
Renowned for her mastery of oil painting, Storey's academic foundation at Queen's University in Canada instilled within her a deep appreciation for the old masters while fostering her predilection towards realism. Her relocation to London marked a transformative chapter, expanding her artistic horizons and introducing her to a vibrant community of contemporary talents.
"Spring Raine" invites viewers to engage with the intricate tapestry of time, expression, and historical resonance woven by Raine Storey. To mark this seminal chapter in the artist's journey, Secteur Prive generously hosted the Fitzrovia Lates VIP evening, where we witnessed first-hand the making of her latest work ,"P.E.P - Politically Exposed Painting."
Joined by galleries, collectors, press and likeminded members of mutual art world networks, Storey worked on site, infusing refuse elements from the historic 35 Portland Place where Secteur Prive is located. From Winston Churchill's wartime toyshop to the iconic IBC Recording Studios frequented by legendary artists, then later, as the epicenter of infamous holographic technology, to the current Colombian Consulate today- this hidden historical venue encapsulates the rich tapestry of cultural heritage that inspires Storey's work.
"Secteur Privé was extremely thrilled to participate in a late Fitzrovia Lates with artist Raine Storey. The show, cheekily titled PEP winks at political undercurrents flowing through our modern society, and Storey’s live creation showcased her technique of incorporating debris from the building’s Colombian Consulate, while bridging contemporary abstractism with historical context. The show felt to have a fusion of the new in the old, humour in the seriousness - and we found this created an interesting commentary on urban and political renewal and cultural exchange around Storey’s works,” remarked Secteur Privé Co-Founder Colette Gibson.
